The Local Inter Faith Zone

Visiting Places of Worship

Groups frequently arrange visits to particular local places of worship to learn more about the faith in question. Sometimes they have ongoing visit programmes.

Our continuing programme of visits to churches, mosques, temples, gurdwaras, synagogues, centres, and educational and hospital chaplaincies, together with the attendant talks about the faiths, has as a whole served to inform the groups’ members, and the members of the institutions being visited, and helped us to deepen our mutual understanding and form friendships.

Recently, some local inter faith bodies such as Bolton Interfaith Council and Merseyside Council of Faiths have been involved in helping develop ‘faith trails’ or ‘faith walks’ for their areas which enable the general public to visit and come to know about different local places of worship.

A faith trail which links 16 different places of worship in Bolton has been unveiled.
The Bolton Faith Trail - the brainchild of the Bolton Interfaith Council - introduces walkers to the history, beliefs and key locations of Christians, Muslims and Hindus. The route was launched by the Mayor of Bolton, Cllr Prentice Howarth-. Walkers can trace the places of worship in the town centre on a route of one-and-a-half miles. A walk around locations outside the centre measures eight-and-a-half miles and a drive is 10 miles long. Mike Creswell, who devised the route, said: "I hope this trail will inspire Bolton people and those who visit the town to learn more about different faiths." The Mayor added: "The Bolton Faith Trail will promote community cohesion. I hope it will be of interest to many groups in Bolton, particularly schools and community groups."

The 16 places of worship are: St Patrick's Roman Catholic Church, the Quaker Meeting House, Bolton Parish Church, Bank Street Unitarian Chapel, Victoria Hall Methodist Mission, St Andrew's and St George's United Reform Church, the Salvation Army Citadel, Veda Mandir, Noor ul Islam Mosque, Tayyiabah Mosque, St Thomas' Church, Smithills Hall Chapel, Deane Parish Church, Shree Kutch Satsang Swaminarayan Temple, Zakaria Mosque and the Shree Swaminarayan Sidhant Sajivan Mandal.
